Flies, rat activity and worn or mouldy chopping boards were all found when hygiene inspectors visited a kebab shop in Falconwood.

Perfect Kebab in Lingfield Crescent was slapped with a hygiene rating of zero when inspectors visited the "very dirty" premises in August this year.

Inspectors rate establishments out of five, from zero - meaning 'urgent improvement necessary' - to five, meaning 'very good'.

When inspectors visited Perfect Kebab they found a dough mixer encrusted with dried dough, food with no date on it, and light fittings caked in grease with dust hanging off them.

Inspectors also found evidence of rats and flies.

They said: "There was rat activity in the rear yard, refuse storage issues and food contamination issues.

"A number of flies were seen landing on food preparation surfaces.

"A box of cheese cups were found in the fridge bearing no use by date.

"Chopping boards, knives, tongs, food containers and cling film dispensers used for handling raw meat were stored with equipment used for ready-to-eat food."

Inspectors also found that none of the prepared food in fridges had been date coded.

Perfect Kebab was told to clean its dough mixer which was caked with dried dough, replace mouldy and worn chopping boards and replace broken glass in the door of the pizza oven.

Although no evidence of rats was found inside the kebab shop, inspectors told to cut back overgrown vegetation in the rear yard and to make sure it was clear of junk and clutter.

Live wires were also found in the toilet, and five plugs used in one gang socket.

Raw meat was also found stored next to bottles of water in the front display counters. This should be kept in a separate chiller.
