Free sewing workshop are being held across south London in a bid to get people to stop spending so much money on awful Christmas jumpers they only wear once or twice.

Love Your Clothes London held a workshop on November 14 at Barnfield Hub in Greenwich, with the idea behind the event being to stop people hurling their reindeer-patterned jumper aside once January arrives.

Forty per cent of people only plan on wearing Christmas jumpers once or twice, according to the organisation, meaning huge amounts of textiles go to waste.

Ali Moore, from Love Your Clothes London, said: “An estimated £30bn worth of UK clothing gathers dust in our wardrobes every year because we don't wear it.

“Rather than buying new Christmas jumpers and party outfits which may only be worn once and then thrown away, we’re encouraging Londoners to upcycle last year’s Christmas jumpers.

“The festive season can be a time of excess and waste, but we want to show people how simple and cheap changes can really make a huge difference to their wardrobes and the environment.”

Future events are being held around south London over the coming weeks, including in Bexley, Sutton, and Merton. For more information visit billetto.co.uk/users/love-your-clothes-london
