One of these five designs will be the new library in Thamesmead and locals get to have their say in which one they prefer.

The library and civic centre will be at the heart of the new Southmere Village being created in south Thamesmead.

The state-of-the-art building is part of the first phase of the new village, which will also include 525 new homes and 40,000 sq ft of commercial space for cafes, shops and offices.

Following an open call in June 2017, 58 architects submitted designs with a final five being shortlisted by an expert judging panel to proceed to the next stage of the competition.

This is where the public comes in, with locals’ views on the designs being shared with the judges so they can use that feedback when discussing the winner.

John Whiles RIBA’s competition architect advisor, said: “The quality of the international response to this competition was exceptional making the selection of the five architect practices to produce a design for the Library and community building very difficult indeed.

“The five practices chosen are very different and the Judges are expecting a challenging and inspiring range of proposals that should be of great interest to all the Residents who will benefit from the facility in the future.

“We look forward to receiving each and every comment that will be considered and discussed in detail before any decision is made.”

The consultation on the library design will continue until October 11 and the designs can be viewed via the Thamesmead Now website and at Parkview Information Hub on Yarnton Way.

Leader of Bexkely Council, Cllr Teresa O’Neill, said: “This new library is an important part of the new Southmere village and the extensive regeneration work happening across Thamesmead.

“I would urge local people to go along and see the proposed designs so they can play a part in shaping the new building.”
