A Woolwich woman will run for a cancer charity after her grandfather and stepdad's mum were diagnosed with cancer.

Yasmin Ojo, 21, signed up to run the Richmond Runfest Half Marathon on September 17 originally in honour of her stepfather’s mother who died of bowel cancer in January 2011.

Since signing up to the run her grandfather has now been diagnosed with lung and bladder cancer.

Yasmin said: “I signed up for this challenge in for my stepdad’s mother, she was a ray of sunshine and was loved by everyone she met.

“I wanted to do something for her and to raise awareness. I decided to run Richmond Half Marathon for World Cancer Research Fund after working on the BBC coverage of the Virgin Money London Marathon.

“Since signing up to the run my lovely Grandfather has been diagnosed with cancer of the lung and bladder so I’m also doing this challenge for him too.”

Paul Fretwell, head of fundraising at World Cancer Research Fund, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Yasmin for her fantastic support. It’s thanks to the amazing efforts of people like Yasmin that we can continue to help the public make more informed lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of cancer.”
