A Greenwich youth organisation has set up a JustGiving page after their campsite was vandalised, forcing necessary repairs.

The Royal Greenwich District Scouts’ campsite toilets, Brownsea Hut and on-site workshop were broken into on July 23 and items of value were stolen.

Police were called following the incident but no further camps will be able to take place on the site in Downe, Kent until repairs are carried out.

“This is a real blow,” district commissioner John Sweeney said.

“We have been working hard over the past few years to upgrade the site while keeping its traditional feel.

“Many young people come here for their first feel of the great outdoors.

“We will have to postpone visits until all repairs are made.”

Chris Bishop, estates manager for Royal Greenwich, said: “We are keen to get on with the repairs as soon as we have adequate funding so that the campsite can reopen to scouts groups and other young organisations for use over the summer.”

Scouting is a volunteer organisation and its young people pay an annual fee to the association.

Despite this, Royal Greenwich are said to be desperate to make the appropriate repairs to the site as soon as they are able to but are reliant on fundraising efforts.
