Greenwich has the highest number of affordable houses built out of any borough in London over the past three years.

From 2013/14 to 2015/16, a total of 1,763 affordable homes were built in the borough, more than anywhere else in the capital, according to a report from the London Mayor's office.

In 2013/14 alone, 50 per cent of the homes built in the borough were affordable houses, with 679.

Forty per cent of homes built over those three years were affordable, which was the third highest in London, behind only Waltham Forest and Havering.

Greenwich Council has said it is especially planning to build new homes for young people struggling get onto the housing market, such as new building properties at Sandpit Place in Charlton.

Danny Thorpe, deputy leader of Greenwich Council, said: “Quality, affordable housing is in scarce supply in London and we know that the issue of housing is a top concern for people across Greenwich, and indeed the country.

“I'm really proud that the decisions we have taken locally are now coming to fruition and delivering the affordable, high quality homes people deserve.

“We will continue our fight to get the Government to lift their restrictions that prevent us from building even more.

“We have a number of innovative projects underway to continue to increase affordable housing in the borough, including the recent creation of a new Community Benefit Society, Meridian Home Start, that will build and deliver new affordable housing locally, including one specifically designed for young people who are struggling to get the first step on the housing market.”
