A Greenwich fly-tipper was caught and fined £500 within 24 hours of dumping their load in Charlton.

The tipper was spotted by residents disposing rubbish from a residential bin, kitchen units, wood and rubble in Maryon Wilson Park at around 9.30pm on July 4.

After park rangers assisted enviro-crime officers in gather evidence, the suspect was interviewed and handed a fixed penalty notice of £400 and ordered to pay another £100 towards clearing it.

Greenwich Council's cabinet member for community safety and environment, councillor Jackie Smith said: "We are very grateful to the residents who respond so swiftly in reporting this crime.

“Thanks to their alertness and the detailed description they provided, we were able to investigate and issue the fine within 24 hours.

“We have heard residents’ concerns on fly-tipping loud and clear and we are continuing to do the best we can on reprimanding fly-tippers in the borough.”
