The royal borough of Greenwich has more than 50 places to eat where food hygiene ratings are not exactly fit for royalty.

Eight restaurants, takeaways and shops currently have the worst possible score of zero stars, meaning urgent improvement is needed.

There are another 44 food outlets that inspectors have given just one star to, signifying that major improvement is required.

Pubs, children’s services and work canteens are among the other businesses and organisations to have been rated poorly for their hygiene in places such as Greenwich town, Woolwich, Plumstead, Charlton, Blackheath and Eltham around the borough.

The details, correct as of today (July 7), have all been published on the government’s Food Standards Agency website.

The ratings have been given to businesses to reflect the standards of food hygiene found when they were inspected by food safety officers from Greenwich Council over the past few months.

Inspectors check the following three elements:

1. How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored

2. The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

3. How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future

As all the details are correct, we will not amend or remove anything. However, we will update this page with any responses from the business owners explaining why they got a low score and what they’ve done to fix the problems.
