At least one person has been injured and multiple pieces of street furniture damaged as drivers try to get to grips with Eltham High Street’s new design.

The High Street has had large redevelopment works recently, including a pedestrian crossing that confused locals that thought it was an incomplete, sideways zebra crossing.

It’s clear that drivers in the area haven’t quite understood the new layout which has resulted in a few unfortunate accidents.

Greenwich Councillor Matt Clare said: “While Eltham High Street is significantly improved following works over the last year the new parking regime is clearly not well understood by all.

“As a result new street furniture has been damaged. At least one injury has occurred by inconsiderate driving in pedestrian areas.”

Councillor Danny Thorpe, cabinet member for regeneration and sustainability, said: “It is true to say that there has been a learning process in Eltham High Street and surrounds as visitors become accustomed to the new parking arrangements.

“This has and is being addressed through a range of actions. The council has written to all traders explaining the new arrangements and asked for support in requiring their deliveries to comply with restrictions and encourage customers to park appropriately.

“A small amount of additional strategically placed street furniture has been installed, including trees, benches, bins and cycle stands, and the new parking bays will be reinforced with some additional road markings.

“Through the above actions the parking situation is much improved compared to earlier in the year.”
