Greenwich Council has shot down rumours Charlton Athletic’s stadium will be turned into housing after a report surfaced into the market value of homes around The Valley.

The report, commissioned by Charlton Athletic Holdings Limited, looks at the potential value of housing at Floyd Road and possibility of the local council allowing it to be redeveloped.

This led supporters’ groups, already unhappy with the ownership of the club, to believe that owner Roland Duchatelet is looking to sell the ground.

Fanzine Voice of the Valley wrote that the document “underpins the view Duchatelet may in the future look to sell of a substantial part of the ground – if not all of it – for residential development”.

The concerns were brought to Greenwich Council by Councillor Charlie Davis, saying such a redevelopment may result in the club having to leave the borough.

However council leader Denise Hyland confirmed that there was no sign from the club that they wanted to redevelop.

Cllr Hyland said: “I thank Councillor Davis for his question but he really should not allow this rumour to bother him.

“There has been no approach from the club or their representatives to relocate and redevelop the football ground for residential purposes.

“The core strategy designates the football ground as community open space and an area at risk of flooding. There is a presumption against redeveloping land that is designated as community open space.

“The Valley is also an Asset of Community Value which was granted in November 2013.”
