A fleet of ships are moored in the harbour at Woolwich in preparation for the Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta.

Starting tomorrow, April 13, up to 30 tall ships will be available for people to tour, with the organisers preparing for over a million visitors.

The last Tall Ships Regatta held in Greenwich was in 2014 and local trainees have been preparing for the festival with some practice onboard the ships.

Trainees of all ages boarded the Tolkien moored at Woolwich Pier for the first time as they prepared for their 15-night sailing trip to Portugal on the final day of the regatta.

Three ships, The Blue Clipper, Santa Maria Manuela and Caravela Vera Cruz, will complete with sail with over 50 local youngsters acting as crew on the ships.

Their tasks will include everything from steering at the helm to climbing the rigging, taking watches and charting the ship’s progress.

Councillor Denise Hyland, leader of Greenwich Council, said: “I am delighted that so many local young people from all walks of life will be taking part in this incredible opportunity.

“Many of the trainees have never sailed before and some have never even left the country so this extraordinary experience will truly broaden their horizons and open doors for them going forward.”

The festival will continue over the Easter weekend with historical re-enactments, street performers, live music and fireworks.

Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald, Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative Industries and Community Wellbeing, said: “It was inspiring to meet the young sail trainees ahead of the start of their amazing adventure and we would like to thank the sponsors for their generosity.

“I wish the trainees all the best on their trip which I am sure will leave them with new skills and confidence in life.”
