A pet rabbit had to be put down after it was found dumped and covered in blood in Greenwich, say the RSPCA.

The RSPCA are appealing for information to find out what happened to the rabbit.

The male adult brown bunny was found near Merryfield, Greenwich covered in blood, with wounded paws and thigh, and unable to move his rear legs.

The homeowner who found him put the rabbit in a cage to keep him safe, and called the RSPCA  who took him to a vet.

The vet said he was so unwell he had to be put to sleep to prevent further suffering

Animal Collection Officer (ACO) Kirstie Gillard said: “This poor rabbit was in an awful state - clearly in a lot of pain, uncared for and alone.

“He had wounds on his thigh and his paws - possibly from some kind of dog bite - and looked as if he had been gnawing at his paws due to stress or irritation.

“He was also incontinent and seemed unable to move his rear legs - which makes it very likely he had been dumped here. He couldn’t have escaped or got very far by himself with such a lack of mobility.

“It is possible that he had medical conditions and rather than take the rabbit to the vet he was dumped and left to fend for himself.

“This makes me feel so sad. We urge pet owners to remember that when they take on an animal - it is for life. They need to make sure they have the finances, or the insurance, to pay for vets when things go wrong.”
