A crowdfunding page for an academic killed by a psychotic Woolwich man days after his daughter was born has raised over £84,000.

Jeroen Ensink, 41, was ferociously stabbed to death by Nigerian student Femi Nandap moments after popping out to post cards announcing the birth of baby Fleur in December last year.

Since his widow Nadja gave an emotional speech at Nandap’s sentencing on Monday, donations to the Just Giving page set up nine months ago have skyrocketed.

The memorial fund aims to continue the work of Mr Ensink, who was a senior lecturer in public health engineering at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The funding page reads: “Jeroen was a highly valued member of the School community, and all who knew him will remember him as a warm and committed friend and colleague.

“He was passionately committed to a simple cause: improving access to water and sanitation in countries where children continue to die needlessly due to the lack of these basic services.

“A natural educator, Jeroen was immensely popular with students in whom he invested much time and energy.

“He was Course Director on the School's very popular master's degree in Public Health in Developing Countries.

“He provided support and inspiration in equal measure and many of his students are now successful researchers and public health professionals in their own right.”

The founders of the campaign say they will donate 100 per cent of the proceeds from the appeal to MSc scholarships for students from sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Nandap, 23, was suffering from a cannabis-induced psychosis at the time of the killing.

He admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility and on Monday was handed a hospital order with no time limit.

The prosecution admitted during the hearing that a decision to drop charges of having a knife and assaulting a police officer six days before the fatal stabbing was wrong.
