A 22-year-old man from Plumstead was arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering as part of an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's anti-corruption command.

The Met arrested nine people across London this morning (September 20), including two serving police officers.

They recieved intelligence that several businesses, including a luxury car company, were being used to launder money and make false insurance claims.

A detective constable, 32,  attached to Met Intelligence was arrested at a residential address in London on suspicion of money laundering, fraud by false representation, perverting the course of justice and offences under the Computer Misuse Act.

A police constable, 22, attached to Redbridge Borough was arrested at a residential address in Essex on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Brooks, who is leading the investigation, from anti-corruption command, said: "Acting on intelligence we have carried out an operation that has resulted in nine arrests, including two serving police officers.

"We are committed to dealing with all corruption in the Met, and that includes those who seek to corrupt our staff."

The other seven people arrested were:

  • A 37-year-old man arrested at an address in Gants Hill on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
  • A 20-year-old man arrested at the same residential address in Gants Hill on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
  • A 46-year-old man arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of money laundering and perverting the course of justice.
  • A 38-year-old woman arrested at a different address in Barnet on suspicion of money laundering.
  • A 37-year-old man arrested at an address in Haringey on suspicion of money laundering.
  • A 22-year-old man arrested at an address in Chadwell Heath on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

The status of the arrested police officers is being reviewed and the IPCC are aware of the investigation.

All of those arrested have been taken to central London police stations and remain in custody.
