A woman has died after a fire ripped through a terraced house in Plumstead.

The fire broke out in Bannockburn Road at around 5.30pm on Friday evening, damaging part of the first and ground floors of the house. 

A woman was rescued by firefighters from the first floor of the house, but died a short while later.

Firefighters also rescued a man who was taken to hospital by paramedics suffering from smoke inhalation.

Some 21 firefighters were called to the scene from Plumstead and east Greenwich fire stations.

The fire was under control by just after 7pm and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
