Commuters have begged rail operators to put an end to the smell of raw sewage wafting from the station at Woolwich Arsenal.

The “vile smell” which often plagues the station worsened this week as temperatures soared.

After rail users took to social media in a bid to end the stink, Southeastern replied to say it is investigating the smell.

However a spokeswoman for Southeastern said the issue is being dealt with by Network Rail.

Commuter Kim Burrows, 25, said she had noticed the smell for the past two weeks.

She told News Shopper: “The past couple of days combined with the heat has been awful.

“There doesn't seem to be anything happening to find the problem and solve it so instead every morning we have to stand and inhale it.”

She added: “It's really not very pleasant at all.”

On Twitter Carol Thomas asked: “Why is nothing been done about that sewage smell at Woolwich Arsenal St??”

Scott Russell-Shove said: “The tunnels between Woolwich Arsenal and Woolwich Dockyard smell like raw sewage.

“It creates a vile smell on the carriages.”

Another Twitter user said: “I’ve perfected holding my breath from ticket barriers to half way down platform at Woolwich Arsenal station.”

In April this year, a commuter told Southeastern he had once again been forced to step over faeces whilst making his way into the station.

He said: “Someone should really look into the drainage at Woolwich station Second time I've had to tread over actual s*** to get my train!”

News Shopper has contacted Network Rail for comment.
