Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Nobel prize winning father of fibre optics Sir Charles Kao and grime artist JME are among 27 University of Greenwich alumni featured in a new exhibition which shows why they are #ProudtobeGreenwich.

Acclaimed music photographer Diane Patrice – whose subjects include Amy Winehouse – took pictures of the former students, ranging from recent graduates to some in their 70s and 80s for the Greenwich Portraits exhibition which is open to the public in the foyer of the university’s Stockwell Street building.

Also among the notable alumni pictured are Greenwich Council leader Denise Hyland, Olympic 800m champion and world record breaker Ann Brightwell, former world Thai boxing champion Rebecca Donnelly and two-time Oscar winning effect guru Guy Penwill.

Greenwich University vice-chancellor professor David Maguire said: “The alumni featured in this exhibition come from many walks of life and disciplines: all are successful and inspirational.

“They have agreed to share their stories so that current students can understand how to achieve their dreams, strive for excellence and keep going in the face of whatever challenges they may confront.”

Mr Maguire added: “There are thousands of people making a contribution in society today, shaping our businesses, developing new technology, teaching our children and caring for our sick, because they studied at Greenwich.

“The people included in this project represent us all and illustrate why I am exceptionally proud of this extraordinary University of Greenwich community.”
