It is the day retailers and shoppers alike have been waiting for – Black Friday is here.

Originating from our cousins across the pond, the American tradition has found its way onto our high streets to the delight and dismay of millions.

The day after Thanksgiving in the US, stores throw open their doors for eye watering deals.

The name supposedly comes from profits soaring into the black – opposed to negative red.

In the past people have resorted to violence to get their hands on the latest must-have deals.

With prices slashed on a range of goods, people camp outside their favourite shops to snap up the top treats.

And in the run-up to Christmas, people also splurge on festive gifts as well as indulgent goodies.

MORE TOP STORIES Numerous shopping centres are cashing in on the bonanza, with people able to shop online as well as in-store.

Big name brands such as New Look, John Lewis, Tesco and Apple are on board for the shopping extravaganza.

But Asda, owned by giant Walmart, is not taking part this year after fights broke out in its stores over cut-price goodies last year.

Thinking of getting in on the action? Luckily News Shopper has put together a handy guide to survive the onslaught.

News Shopper wants to hear your stories of the day – did you camp? What deals did you get? Witness any cat-fights? How crowded are the stores?
