People in Greenwich and Lewisham are being asked to nominate their 'Healthcare Heroes' - NHS staff who they feel have gone that "extra mile" in caring for them.

Now in its second year, the Greenwich and Lewishan NHS Trust's annual staff awards ceremony encourages members of the public to nominate a member of staff or a team who have made a real difference to their lives.

The awards cover the Trust's 6,000 staff from University Hospital Lewisham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Greenwich, Queen Mary’s Sidcup and a range of other community settings.

Last year's winner was QEH midwife Joanne Golding, nominated by Nicola Holdren.

Miss Holdren, from Woolwich, said: "Joanne was outstanding and the most stable, supporting factor in my life during my pregnancy.

"Jo’s support was second to none from the beginning, but she excelled herself during my five day labour (yes, five days, 120 hours, 7,200 minutes, 432,000 seconds!).

"I will be forever grateful for the exceptional service I received from her."

Ms Golding added the award meant a lot.

She said: "The award was a lovely recognition of the work that not only I do but the whole team, including social workers, family support workers, the mental health team and all my midwifery colleagues.

"The care we all give makes a difference to all women and sometimes we all forget what impact our care can have.

"Winning this award reminds us of this."

Claire Champion, director of nursing and clinical services, said:  "The staff awards are a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate the wonderful work our colleagues deliver on a daily basis.

"We are asking members of the public who have received outstanding care at the trust to help us honour the staff responsible by nominating them for an award, and telling us how there made a difference to their lives."
