A new school building and university facility have been given top awards for architectural excellence.

Both the John Roan school's Maze Hill buildings and the University of Greenwich's school in Stockwell Street have bagged RIBA London Awards for architectural excellence.

John Roan head teacher Des Malone picked up the prize at a National Theatre ceremony on May 18, along with architects John McAslan and Partners.

The project saw a brand new three-storey building and a modernisation of the old listed site.

Mr Malone said: "We are honoured and delighted to receive such recognition for our new school buildings. It’s a testament to the commitment of a whole team of people involved in the project.

"Credit must go to the architects, builders, staff, governors, foundation trustees, parents and carers and of course our students for their vision, commitment and support of the project over the last couple of years.

"We hope these school buildings will serve the children of Greenwich in a way that John Roan himself would have envisaged for many years to come."
