Nigel Freestone, 67, took on the 262ft AcelorMittal Orbit in the Olympic Park to raise money for Demelza's Hospice in Eltham.
Mr Freestone decided to support the charity in memory of his granddaughter Abigail Erin who received care from Demelza's
Abigail was born severely disabled as a result of a trauma in the womb just before birth.
Mr Freestone said: "My wife Ronnie and I continue to receive wonderful care as part of the grandparents' group and I want to support the work Demelza does with those in similar situations - adding life to days when days cannot be added."
Mr Freestone, who works as a computer programmer for Bexleyheath solicitors completed the abseil on May 10.
He added: "The abseil was a lovely experience - I enjoyed it very much.
"We got quite cold at the top in the wind but the views up there are spectacular.
"The camaraderie among those waiting was great. I met a Demelza dad who was doing it because his son was getting brilliant help and support and I understood completely.
