Police are searching for a man believed to have fled through back gardens from the scene of an arson attack in Linnet Close, Thamesmead.

The fire is believed to have been started by a man who poured a flammable liquid through the letter box of a house before setting a stick alight and posting it.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at 9.30am on May 7.

One person, who was upstairs in the property at the time, escaped injury after being alerted to the flames by smoke alarms.

Detective Sergeant Alex Brown of Greenwich CID said: “A man was seen in Linnet Close around the time of the incident. He was wearing a hooded a top and carrying a stick and a container.

“I would like to hear from anyone who saw this person in the street, at the scene of the fire, or leaving the scene.

"We believe that he may have left the street through back gardens. All information that I receive will be treated in strictest confidence.”
