A young man was arrested and taken to hospital after smashing up his BMW as he tried to drive away from police in Abbey Wood, this morning.

Police were called to Overton Road at 8.08am to reports of a car having knocked down a lamppost that was blocking the road.

When the 20-year-old driver spotted officers arriving on scene, he tried to plough over a central reservation in the road to make a getaway.

After realising his escape route was deeply flawed, he ran off but was caught by police in nearby Maran Way and arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
