A playing field in Blackheath once earmarked for a new school has been protected and will be brought back into use.

Charity Fields in Trust has worked with Greenwich Council to ensure the future of Hervey Road's London Marathon Playing Field, which is expected to be restored to full use by next summer.

The council had once planned to build new premises for Plumstead's Willow Dene School on the fields, sparking an eight-year campaign by the local Friends group. That plan has since been rejected and the school is being rebuilt on its current site.

Fields in Trust chief executive Helen Griffiths said: "Fields in Trust is delighted that The Royal Borough of Greenwich have committed to protecting the London Marathon Playing Field on Hervey Road.

"Our outdoor spaces are increasingly under threat and it is ever more important to safeguard vital green spaces for future generations to enjoy. We hope many more landowners follow Greenwich’s example."
