The Met Police helicopter circled a Charlton park today (January 21) after schoolchildren reported seeing a man armed with a gun.

According to reports, the man was spied in Maryon Wilson Park.

The Met's helicopter team tweeted this afternoon: "1400: Searching open spaces in SE7 following reports of an armed male."

According to the Maryon Parks Hub ‏Twitter feed, the man was spotted twice - once this afternoon and also yesterday by pupils from Thorntree Primary School.

They tweeted: "Man with gun reported by 3 kids yesterday and also seen in Maryon Park today by adult mum and park keeper. Keep 'em peeled."

A text from Thorntree sent to parents read: "We have been in touch with the police as some of our younger children think they have seen a man with a gun yesterday.

"Please be assured that we have contacted the police who have patrolled and sent out cars and a helicopter."

A spokesman for Greenwich police said: "We can confirm that police were called to Maryon Wilson Park, Charlton, at around 2pm on January 21 after receiving reports related to an armed man in the park.

"The Met Police helicopter together with firearm units and response officers from Greenwich attended the area."

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information should call police on 101 or 999.
