Police and hostage negotiators surrounded a Woolwich petrol station yesterday evening (October 28) after a man doused himself in petrol and threatened to set himself alight.

The incident reportedly happened at a petrol station in at around.

Emergency services rushed to Artillery Place at around 7.20pm and the man was taken down by a baton round (a non lethal projectile) following fears over the petrol which had been doused around the scene.

One witness claimed the man told police: "Shoot me, dog."

The man was briefly taken to hospital as a precaution before being arrested. He is currently in police custody.

A Met spokesman said: “We were called at around 7.20pm to a petrol station on Artillery Place, Woolwich following reports of a man threatening self harm.

“Officers, including firearms officers, hostage negotiators, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene.

“Due to the significant risk of harm to the male and others from petrol which had been dispersed at the scene, at around 9pm a single baton round was discharged and the man was safely detained.

“He was taken to a south London hospital as a precaution but has now been released. He has been arrested and remains in police custody.

“No reports of any other injuries during the incident.

“A post incident procedure has begun and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have been informed. Both these actions are routine in these circumstances.

“This incident is not terrorist related.”
