CHARLTON’S revamped lido is set to close over the winter months after “disruptive” building works put off users.

The £2m refurbished Charlton Lido will shut from November 3 after facing financial problems from a lack of membership, according to its managers GLL.

The outdoor pool facilities - referred to by managers as Royal Greenwich Lido - are now set to reopen early next year when building work is complete with a new gym and exercise studio.

A GLL spokeswoman said: “The disruption caused by ongoing building work at the lido over the past few months has had a knock on effect on membership numbers, which have been lower than expected and totalled around 150 at the end of August.

“The lido can cost up to £500 a day to run on cold winter days and it therefore makes commercial sense to introduce this temporary closure until the entire complex is fully up and running, with both wet side and dry side facilities in operation and no building disruption to deter visitors.”

She added: "There are a number of alternative pools in the Royal Borough of Greenwich that are available to those who wish to continue swimming during the coming months, these include the Waterfront Leisure Centre, the Arches Leisure Centre, Eltham Leisure Centre and Thamesmere Leisure Centre."
