Activists warn of immigrants inflow

A ROMANIAN or Bulgarian family-of-four would be eight or nine times better off if they were to move to Britain when access restrictions are lifted at the end of the year, immigration campaigners claim.

A Bulgarian family - made up of one individual on minimum wage with a dependent spouse and two children - has a weekly income of £62 at home, compared to the £543 they could pocket in the UK, while Romanian families earn around £70 a week.

Elsewhere, single workers from the Eastern European countries would be four or five times better off, the study by Migration Watch UK found.

And a comparison with the conditions Polish workers enjoy in Britain showed that the economic incentives for Romanian and Bulgarian workers were twice as great.

Migration Watch UK chairman Sir Andrew Green said: "The wage differences turn out be simply stunning.

"The previous government made a huge mistake by agreeing to accession treaties that granted full access to our labour market to workers from countries that have only fifth of our GDP per head.

"Given that the economic incentives for Romanian and Bulgarian workers are twice those now enjoyed by Polish workers, it would be absurd to suggest that there will not be a significant inflow."

Temporary curbs were imposed on Romanians and Bulgarians in 2005 to protect the British labour market, but they expire in December and under EU laws cannot be extended.

The Government has refused to provide an estimate on the number of Romanians or Bulgarians it expects to arrive in Britain, but Migration Watch previously said it could be up to 50,000 a year for the first five years.

Leading politicians from Bulgaria and Romania have dismissed fears that the change in access restrictions will trigger a wave of immigration to the UK.

I'm certainly not BNP and am not racist, but do you honestly think it's a good thing for more and more immigrants coming to the UK? Can we realistically cope with it? - No, we can't. Other countries (Australia is a fine example) have much tighter controls. Nobody calls Australia a racist country, yet they wouldn't have this situation.

PaulErith - I agree whole heartedly. We must have a cap on immigration from all countries and the sooner we can adopt a points based system the better. Hopefully we've learned from the Polish example where we are paying child benefit for children that aren't and have never been in the UK but are being claimed for because the parents can.

If I had to, by law, feed and clothe 20 or 30 of my neighbours I would use up any life savings I had accumulated over the years and would be bankrupted very quickly, I would be very bitter and very unhappy although It would be no fault of my neighbours, they would just be taking advantage of the law, It may be a simple analogy but I believe an accurate one.
I'm not sure if a whole country can become bankrupt, but I think I'm just about to find out.

Yes there are some very poor peasants in Romania, but they will not be coming here because they cannot afford the air fare. Those who work in admin jobs will not be coming here because the wages here may be higher than those in Romania but the cost of living is very much higher too. As for Gypsies, they have never yet worried about breaking the law & they are unlikely to start worrying about such matters now.

bulgarian and romanians are already here legally in the Uk using a european loophole that if you apply to be self employed ( big issue seller ) that will already allow you into this country, that will give you a national insurance number and a foothold on to the labour market, nhs, housing etc......
it was reported in the daily mail last week ( search engine it )) that this is what is happening already after the mail interviewed people from these countries..... no big deal though because david cameron is on a tour of india and other countries saying students can come here and study.... unlimited numbers, not a problem, ( i think he is trying to sell some airware out there ) ......no idea why indian students cant study in their own countries though?!
tony blair promised a lot and failed, gordon brown called a woman a racist/bigot when she challenged him over immigration.... then brown done a live debate and had the cheek to say "immigration was out of control and he was going to stop it!"
dave cameron said he was going to reduce immigration from hundreds of thousands to > tens of thousands while he is out in the east inviting every man and his dog.....
liars, cheats, say anything to the electorate before the election, the do the complete opposite....
eric pickles doesn't want a "number" put on the number of legal migrants that might come here in 2014 from bulgaria or romania because they don't want to alarm the public... and simply do not have any idea of the numbers involved ( remember the last time they said only 13,000 migrants from eastern europe would come here? turned out to be over 1 million at least.... making polish the second most spoken language after english )
but hey ho, the government have sent out thousands of leaflets to romania.... "it rains a lot in england > it's cold" >>>> oh wow! of course when the mail showed these roma`s these leaflets, they all laughed out very, very, loud..... minus 30 in winter..... only 25% of properties have sealed sewers or running water.... living on £25 a week is the norm, so a £70 one way ticket to victoria station is very, very, tempting.......

As far as I know BNP High Command takes the view that Europeans are at least White, & Christian, so they are not the immediate enemy. It's smoked ukippers who do most of the anti european ranting.

As for only 25% of Romanian & Bulgarian homes having sealed sewers & running water, that is pure bollards.

I have lived & worked in Romania, it's an ok place if you are in work, and the people are far preferable to Londoners.

Ron, antibiotics in Romania are cheap & easy to obtain compared to the UK, go to hospital & you may have to wait twenty minuites before you are seen & diagnosed. Dentists fees are less than a quarter of UK fees, & the dentists & their assistants are polite and helpful.

I am not saying that there are no problems in that country, of course there are, but nobody will be coming here for our NHS.

we certainly dont need any more immigrants from eastern europe or any where else
our children are already having to compete with an already over insaturated job market with hundreds chasing jobs
most of these people from romania or bulgaria will offer nothing to this country and the sole reason for coming here will be to claim benefits and do black market jobs on the side
our prison population has already shot through the roof with criminals from foreign countries making their way into the prison population costing the british tax payers ( yes me and you! ) even more money!
over 2 million people are waiting for council properties so to increase the population of this country with even more unskilled people is total folly
please reject the liblabcon parties who are not listening to public concern over this serious issue

"Stephen Reid Dorman, the BNP candidate managed a laughable 57 votes and finished once again in last place, that equates to just 2.68% of the vote."

I don't support BNP and I'm not racist but..what concerns me is that our Government seem to make all these decisions without thinking ahead. They are already cutting benefits to save money, but where is this money going to go? You can't blame people for not wanting more immigrants here unless they can support themselves, and in order to do that they would need to have jobs..we don't have enough work here for our own as it is!

At least we have agreed on something at last! As for 'gay rights' as you put it, I don't have a problem with gay people, I've encountered many good friends over the years who are just that, they're been the salt of the earth..however, I don't agree with same sex marriage but apart from that I accept them in the same way as anyone else. They have a right to live as they choose, but like everything else, when it comes down to expecting everyone to see that as 'normal' in our society, then it's going to take some convincing. I don't see myself as being prejudice...but I do certainly detest anyone who inflict any kind of violence, no one has got the right to go around kicking the **** out of someone just because they're different..I take people as I find them. As for immigration, like many things other things these days..give an inch, they'll take a yard!

Lou uncontrolled immigration is a major problem. We all know we don't need unskilled immigrants. That problem has lots to do with our EU membership though.
Gay marriage for me his a simple matter of basic rights. I don't care who you marry or anyone else marries, why should we be bothered that two men or two girls want to marry. Its a non issue, other than they should have the same rights as straight people. The bottom line for me is if you don't like gay marriage don't marry a gay. End of story.
