DRIVERS looking to exploit an alleged loophole over parking spaces are warned they will not succeed by Greenwich Council.

It comes after claims that motorists might have been fined unlawfully for using suspended parking bays in 16 councils including Greenwich.

There are around 300 parking bays suspended in the borough each month for reasons such as building works.

A TV report suggested drivers might be entitled to claim back fines from Greenwich Council as it did not have signs authorised by the Department for Transport (DfT).

But Greenwich Council and London Councils insist such reports are “misleading” and they are acting legally following a judgement in the Court of Appeal.

A Greenwich Council spokesman said: "The Royal Borough of Greenwich is entirely confident our parking bay suspension signage is fully compliant with the law.

“Reports on this issue are misleading. DfT approval is not required.”
