A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed to death in Woolwich.

Police were called at 2.06am this morning (Jan 29) to reports of a man assaulted at a house in Elmdene Road.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a man suffering from stab injuries.

The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.47am.

A forensic team was working at the house today, which had a smashed plane of glass on its front door, while police officers carried out door to door inquiries in surrounding roads.

Neighbours claimed the only noise they had heard was a loud bang, but otherwise all had remained quiet until police arrived.

Patricia Conroy, 62, said: "There was this loud bang when I was sitting in the front room at 1:50am. I looked out of my window and saw there was a big white van that had pulled up. I didn’t see anyone get out."

She went on: "There’s always lot of comings and goings with that house and I never knew who lived there."

A 44-year-old man was arrested this morning in Well Hall Road, Eltham, which had a large section of its pavement cordoned off by police today.

Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased, but await formal identification and confirmation that next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

Police from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating. If you have information call 020 8721 4805 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
