HUNDREDS of people turned out across the area at the weekend to mark this year's Holocaust Memorial Day.

Lewisham saw two events with the annual multi-faith service at Catford Synagogue attended by believers in Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism.

At Catford's Broadway Theatre, children from Childeric, St William of York, Holy Trinity, Fairlawn, St John the Baptist and Brindishe Green primary schools put on music, dance and drama.

Lewisham's Holocaust Memorial Committee chairwoman, Councillor Pauline Morrison, said: "It's an opportunity for everyone to come together, irrespective of belief or background, and unite in an effort to create a better and safer future."

In Woolwich, Greenwich Council commemorated the occasion by remembering the victims and honouring the survivors of Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.

Children from Cherry Orchard Primary School provided readings reflecting on what these stories mean to society today and how we can bring about change for the better.
