Prior to the redevelopment works, reports of graffiti, trash and empty gas canisters used to inhale laughing gas were commonplace, attracting all forms of anti-social behaviour to the area.

The old one-acre site, which has been there for more than half a century, was demolished in May.

The up-to-date equipment includes an accessible roundabout, steel cableway, basket seat swing, rope swing, adventure trail and multi-play slide units.

A trampoline will be installed later this summer, the council has confirmed.

However, the council has confirmed that there are no plans to rebuild the cafe that burnt down in September 2011.

Speaking to News Shopper at the time of the development, Mrs Gemma Thomson, 27 of Portland avenue, said: “I'm looking forward to having a safe place for my children to play in.

“I'd love the cafe to come back too because of safety, first aid and somewhere to get a nice drink - it also opens up a new job.”

The play area set in the north west corner of the 15-acre park was installed by Wicksteed Leisure.

Cabinet Member for Young People, Cllr Jordan Meade, said: “The play equipment that has been added to Woodlands Park is a massive improvement.

“The area is for both younger and older children and I hope it’s used by everyone, as it’s there for people to play on to enjoy.

“We’ve also committed further funding to improve the toilet block which is anticipated to be completed later in the year.”
