A woman wants the family of an elderly lady, who died when she was hit by a car in Northfleet, to know that she was not alone.

Sharna Weber, from Swanscombe, was driving home when she saw the fatal incident in London Road on Monday (May 30).

An 88-year-old woman, named locally as Sifa Rifat, who was using a walking stick to help her cross the road, did not survive the “nasty” crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After she was hit, Ms Weber immediately got out of her car and went over to help.

The 34-year-old told News Shopper: “Myself and a gentleman put her in the recovery position when we reached her – she took a nasty whack.

“It’s still affecting me, she was just an old lady.

“I knew [that she wouldn’t make it] when I was with her – she was unconscious with a weak pulse, short breathing and a really bad head injury.”

An ambulance was called in an attempt to give the elderly lady a fighting chance, but she died just after 11.50am.

Ms Weber, who has taken time off work following the incident, wants to let the family of the late pensioner know that she was not alone when she passed away.

She said: “I’d love to tell the family that we tried to comfort her and keep her warm until professional help arrived.

“I would hate for them to think she was alone.”

She added: “Nothing like this has happened to me before – it’s not nice to watch someone die.

“I just offer my condolences to the lady’s family.”

Flowers have been left for Ms Rifat in London Road, along with heartfelt messages.

One card reads: “In loving memory of Sifa. God bless, with love, Anna, Iris, Gwen, Bill and Vera.”

Kent Police have confirmed that the pensioner was hit by a blue Audi A6 near the junction with Pier Road.

The driver of the car, a 27-year-old man from Northfleet, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and causing death while uninsured.

He has been bailed until August 22 to allow enquiries to continue.
