A north Kent policeman has been disciplined after he shouted and used force on another officer on a night out.

Inspector Henry Sandhu was off duty when on duty police officers dealt with a man being drunk and disorderly on November 1 last year.

Insp Sandhu tried to speak with the drunk man but was asked to move away by police - he responded with aggression, intimidation and force, it is alleged.

He was asked to leave so that the junior officers could deal with the situation but continued to “protest” and by doing so abused his authority amounting to misconduct.

On May 11 a police panel concluded that drink had affected his judgement and that he did not act with sufficient self-control.

This was demonstrated, the panel said, in him continuing to engage with the man who was clearly agitated by his presence. He failed to treat his colleagues with respect and courtesy and abused his authority.

The officer did not accept that his conduct amounted to gross misconduct.

The panel believes that the inspector’s conduct fell below the standard expected of an officer of his rank and had breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour relating to Authority, Respect and Courtesy and Discreditable Conduct.

He has been issued a written warning.
