Pedestrians and drivers in Welling have been left baffled by this road sign claiming to be a 'pedestrain crossing'.

The misspelt sign was spotted by bemused Bexley resident Sarah Garaway on Hook Lane yesterday (September 25).

It seems sign writers across south east London and north Kent have experienced their fair share of spelling blunders in the past.

Here's a few of our favourites.

1. Road markers made this embarrassing mistake outside Istead Rise primary in Gravesend.

The yellow road marking which reads 'SOHOOL' rather than 'SCHOOL’ attracted attention on social media, with Twitter users suggesting the perpetrators brush up on their spelling skills.

2. In Welling residents were left scratching their heads over how to spell their street name after realising signs on either side of the road are spelt differently.

South Gipsy Road suddenly becomes South Gypsy Road.

Resident Caroline Woolf said: "I've lived here for 15 years and folks clearly haven’t spotted the difference.”

3. In another school spelling mishap Burnt Ash Primary in Bromley installed their new ‘SHCOOL’ sign.

Headteacher Leah Crawley said it was a mistake by the manufacturer and corrected within three hours.

She said: “It was a piece of fencing in the new railings we have had put in the school.

“When people put it up they realised the mistake but did not have a piece to correct it right away.”

4. Over in Greenwich residents were perplexed by this ‘No dumpimg’ sign.

A reader spotted the Greenwich Council sign last year, before sending in their amusing snap.

5. In neighbouring borough Lewisham one eagle-eyed shopper spotted a careless spelling mistake on a road sign in Lewisham High Street.

Hither Green resident Yee Shun Fung was enjoying some spring retail therapy when she noticed a rather peculiar spelling of the word 'central' on a roundabout sign outside Beaumont Beds.

The 26-year-old law student said: "I bet the people who made the sign make more money than me - and I can spell!"
