A major road connecting Gravesend and Rochester was closed both ways following an accident, involving a lorry and a car.

A man in his 20s was hospitalised after the crash on the A226 Rochester Road, in Shorne - and the road was closed whilst an oil spill was cleared.

It was reported the car driver hit the central reservation at 1pm today (Aug 17) before colliding with the lorry.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a car and a lorry.

"It was reported the car hit a traffic island first.

"A man in his 20s was suffering from chest pain.

"One ambulance attended and treated him at the scene, before taking him fully conscious to Medway Maritime Hospital."

No serious injuries were reported.

The accident occurred between Church Lane and Green Farm Lane/Forge Lane.

It is believed the car driver may have had a medical episode prior to the incident.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Kent Police were called at 1.01pm following a collision involving a car and a lorry on the A226 at Shorne.

"The road is currently closed while an oil spill and damaged roadside furniture is cleared."

The road was re-opened at 4pm.
