The musical based on the hits written by Greenwich Music Time headliner Ray Davies was the big winner at last night’s Olivier Awards.

Gravesend’s Gemma Arterton – nominated for best actress in a musical - was beaten by Katie Brayben who won the prize for her role in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.

Theatre’s biggest awards were hosted by Lenny Henry at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.



The Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon bagged four prizes including the big one, Best New Musical, as well as Outstanding Achievement in Music for Ray Davies, who plays Greenwich Music Time festival on July 24.

Other winners included Mark Strong (best actor), Dame Angela Lansbury (best actress in a supporting role), Nathaniel Parker (best actor in a supporting role) and Penelope Wilton, who beat the likes of Gillian Anderson, Kristin Scott Thomas and Imelda Staunton to the best actress award.
