Parents gathered to protest against Bexley Council’s proposal to downgrade Crayford Children’s Centre, because the area is not ‘deprived’ enough.

The council plan to make it a 'link' centre in July, leaving the North End centre in Slade Green as their nearest 'hub' facility.

Of the 14 children's centres in Bexley, eight will be made into 'link' sites, closely connected to six 'hub' sites.

Parents and children from Crayford gathered outside the Iron Mill Lane centre on Friday to speak about how the service has helped them, and their fears about the council's proposals.

Mum-of-two Amy Tunstall, 34, said: "They assume that Crayford is less of a deprived area.

"We are losing a brilliant service which is going to have a big impact.

"It’s a shame that they feel that we are not as needy. We have got needs in our area."

Crayford parents will be allowed to use the North End centre, but the Stanham Place resident fears Erith parents will get priority, leaving other parents on a waiting list.

She added: "The majority of parents do not have cars."

The part-time school worker and volunteer said: "You have got all walks of life at the centre.

"All these facilities are useful for any family regardless of their finances.

"I am sure that without that service there are going to be a lot of other issues that will come up, like a rise in post natal depression."

A Bexley Council spokesman said: "It is important to stress that no centres are being closed.

"The main difference is that the type of services delivered from some centres will change, to meet local need."
