Plans are in motion to redevelop the derelict former maternity unit in Gravesend town centre.

The big, grey building, which has a prime spot on Bath Street, has remained empty for a decade.

Gravesham council have been trying to track down the department which owns the building for “ten or twelve years”.

Now they are finally in talks with the NHS trust about developing the site.

“We are concerned that the building has turned into disrepair,” said Gravesham council leader John Burden.

“It’s a fantastic site, we cannot allow it to remain redundant.”

Cllr Burden said initial ideas are “primarily residential” and flats may be built on the site, as well as offices and shops.

He said: “It’s too important a site to be left vacant for so long. It’s a residential area. It’s a retail area. It’s really close to the station. It’s got a hospital nearby.”

“We are looking at general principles. But the good news is the plan’s now in motion,” he added.

“They will have to sell the site first and get planning permission. We are looking at at least a year, possibly a lot longer.”
