A man suffered burns to his hands and face from an oxygen cylinder at a Gravesend Asda this morning (Feb 20).

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to the fire involving an oxygen cylinder at the supermarket in Thames Way, at around 9am.

The firefighters found the shopper in his 50s had suffered burns to his hands and face following the failure of the cylinder.

It is believed the shopper was escorting his mother, who for medical reasons uses the oxygen cylinder, through the store when it failed and caught fire, after he had placed it in the trolley.

The man who suffered burns was placed in the care of paramedics and was taken to hospital. An investigation into the failure of the cylinder is underway.

Crews extinguished the fire by cooling the cylinder with a hose reel and made the cylinder safe, before handing it over to store managers.
