Fish and chips are a great British institution that we all love. But there are so many chip shops out there, how do you even know where to begin to find the yummiest?

To help you out, we asked our Facebook and Twitter friends for their top tips and then set about trying to pick the highlights.

Our generous social media chums provided nearly 50 different suggestions, so inevitably some great places have not made our cut.

Where?

Queen Street, Gravesend

Why?

Gravesend Tourism (@GoGravesham), of all people, piped up to tell us: “Here in '#Gravesend you cant beat the award winning @GravesendChippy”. Reliance has been going for 90 years, including during the war, and has won hatfuls of prizes.

Tammy Carroll on Facebook told us: “A better fish and chips you will not find!”

News Shopper: Petts Wood fish and chip shop The Village makes Top 50 in the UK

THE VILLAGE FISH AND CHIPS

Where?

Petts Wood Road, Petts Wood

Why?

It’s officially one of the 50 best fish and chip shops in the country and everything has been set up for the best quality food possible, even if it costs a few pence more.

The food is fried in ground nut oil, which is healthier and drier, the batter is light and everything is freshly cooked. To top it off, the staff are dead friendly.

Ade Pashby commented on Facebook: “You pay a bit more but everything is cooked fresh in front of you.”

GOLDEN CHIPPY

Where?

Greenwich High Road, Greenwich

Why?

Shopper’s own Hatty Collier (@HattyCollier) said: “Old school experience and you can sit in and have a glass of wine or a beer.”

Where?

Sherwood Park Avenue, Blackfen

Why?

On Facebook, Garry Willy told us: “Sea Bream at Penhill is absolutely fantastic Look at the queues on Friday and Saturday night - sometimes 20 deep.”

BROCKLEY'S ROCK

Where?

Brockley Road, Brockley

Why?

As well as good old-fashioned fish and chips, Brockley’s Rock also focuses on ethical and sustainable food. There’s grilled seabass, salmon, calamari and prawns alongside the usuals.

Tracy Crichlow wrote on Facebook: “They do a gluten free night on a Tuesday, bit of a mission to get to for some but it's great and they have a seating area.”

Jenny Andrews added: “The Brockley Rock, tastes amazing and it's open Sundays too!”

According to our own review from 2012, Brockley’s Rock does ‘a damn fine meal’.

SUTTON AT HONE FISH BAR

Why?

Dave Gillett wrote on Facebook: “Sutton at hone fish bar best around.”

Where?

Salisbury Road, Bromley

Why?

Salisbury’s – which also has branches in Biggin Hill and White Leaf – hads been around for 28 years and owner Allen Halim, 55, puts their success down to hard work from a team led by manager Nad Ariff.

He’s also a stickler for quality. He said: “Buy the best to serve the best.

"We insist on that.”

FRYING PAN

Where?

Parsonage Manor Way, Belvedere

Why?

Frying pan has been around for 24 years with the same owner and promises fresh ingredients, freshly cooked.

Frying Pan’s Sunny Khaira, 43,said: “We get a lot of repeat customers, the furthest comes from Cobham.”

MARINO FISH BAR

Where?

Maidstone Road, Sidcup

Why?

Marino’s Peter Charalambous said: “We use the best ingredients, the best way we know. We keep it fresh and try to keep the customers happy.

“We get a lot of repeat customers.”
