News Shopper has learned Bexley's Morrisons stores are safe - but it still remains unclear which 10 stores will close.

The Bradford-based grocery chain announced yesterday (Jan 13) its CEO Dalton Phillips was stepping down and 10 stores would be shutting with 400 jobs lost.

The company refused to disclose to News Shopper which shops are for the chop but it has been confirmed by a reliable source that the Bexley stores are safe.

The decision to remove Mr Philips, who has been in charge since 2010, came as Morrisons posted more disappointing trading figures, with a 3.1 per cent slide in like-for-like sales in the six weeks to January 4.

Morrisons insisted the performance was not the trigger for the departure of Mr Philips, who last year announced £1 billion in price cuts over three years and a new loyalty card scheme promising to match discounters Aldi and Lidl.

The move after Tesco boss Dave Lewis announced plans for 43 store closures and the cancellation of 49 new stores – including developments in Bexley and Dartford.

Morrisons told News Shopper it would not be publicly disclosing which stores would close.
