Gravesham Borough Council are urging green-fingered residents to go for gold in this year's In Bloom event.

The council are hunting down volunteers to help make the borough look even more beautiful in the run up to the national competition which will be judged in July.

Sarah Knight, Senior Media Officer at Gravesham Council said: "This year we are going for gold, all local businesses and residents within a mile of the town centre are being asked to get involved by decorating their garden with flowers and as much colour as possible."

Plans are also underway to decorate urban areas with knitted flowers and bunting made by an urban knitting group who meet every Monday from 12pm - 2pm at The Woodville, Gravesend, everyone welcome.

Sarah added: "As a part of this year’s Gravesham in Bloom competition, as well as the usual hanging baskets and flower displays, some of the urban areas will be decorated with knitted flowers.

"The council has pulled together an urban knitting group. The group met for the first time on Monday to start knitting and crocheting flowers that can be used in urban areas in Gravesham, they will also be making metres of bunting. The idea is to dress areas which are not suitable for traditional planting schemes with brightly coloured handmade flowers.

"There was a great turn out for the first meeting."
