Plans have been announced for a new supermarket on the site of a former historic Gravesend pub.

The plans for the old Prince of Wales pub in East Milton Road are being discussed at a Gravesham council meeting today.

It is not yet known which retailer is hoping to move in - although a Morrisons store has been rumoured.

There are also proposals for more housing to accompany the supermarket on the site.

The rector of a nearby church told News Shopper he believes housing would be useful but a store would be less desirable for the area.

Grade II-listed St Peter and St Paul’s Parish Church is next door to the site and has hosted meetings on the proposed developments.

It is believed English Heritage has been involved in ensuring any new buildings would not spoil the look of the church.

Rector Graham Herbert said: "It will be good to see the derelict site developed and made useful.

"I think providing housing would be a higher priority than getting a retailer in as there are already a lot of shops."

The Gravesham Council planning document describes the "erection of three storey building" which will provide six flats with retail shops and a two-storey terrace of four three-bedroom houses.

The Prince of Wales building was built as a farmhouse in 1789 and rebuilt as a pub in 1792.

By 2006 it had closed and damaged by fire and vandalism.
