The Bromley Healing Group offers spiritual therapy and helps people heal themselves of their ailments. DAVID MILLS finds out why people should try it.

CYNICS might say spiritual healing is just a load of mumbo jumbo, but for others it really does work.

For the past 27 years, the Bromley Healing Group has been helping people get over their ailments - both physical and mental.

The healers hold weekly sessions at their centres in Bromley town centre, Petts Wood, Orpington and Beckenham.

Chairman Jeannie Lister says they help people of all ages with all kinds of problems, providing an alternative therapy to what people might get from a trip to the doctor.

The 80-year-old said: "We get a lot of elderly people who are on their own, suffering with backache or joint problems.

"We get middle-aged people with broken marriages, problems of abuse in childhood and stress."

She added: "We also get young people in their late 20s and 30s who have had broken relationships or who can't find their way.

"A lot of people can't talk about their problems but they can to somebody who they don't know."

Mrs Lister said: "The talk gives them strength and courage to help themselves.

"It's not counselling by any means. We just talk and listen."

A typical, confidential healing session lasts half an hour and is one-to-one.

The healer works around the patient with hands a short distance from the patient's body and aims to put them in a relaxed state of mind.

Mrs Lister said: "We tell clients to have a break from all worrying thoughts and imagine they are overseas.

"Some say it's wonderful, some say they feel utterly at peace and don't want to leave.

"We encourage positive thinking. That's what we are all about."

She added: "We don't promise to cure people, we help them to heal themselves."

The group, which has 20 healers, will hold an alternative healing therapy day on the fourth floor at Bromley Central Library in the High Street from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday.

    'YOU FEEL THIS INCREDIBLE ENERGY'

ADRIAN Appley has been attending the Bromley Healing Centre every Thursday for the past year.

The 65-year-old went for help because he has bad sleeping patterns.

He says after each healing session, he walks out feeling refreshed and like a new person.

Mr Appley, of Chatterton Road, Bromley, said: "When I wake up I am woozy as I don't get the rest I need.

"I benefit from the healing. It just helps me in life in general."

He added: "I feel happier and more controlled in myself.

"A session lasts for about 20 to 25 minutes.

"The healer puts her hands on my shoulders and sometimes my feet.

"Normally there's not much physical contact. It's not massage."

He said: "I have my eyes closed, and the healer moves around my body, sometimes standing a few feet away from me.

"You feel the heat from the healer's hands, you feel this incredible energy which revitalises me."

Mr Appley, who is a retired gardener, says anyone with ailments should give healing a try.

He said: "Our biggest critics are those who never go along to these places and never try anything."
