IF KENT is going to have a horse, let it be prancing horse - is the view of the county council.
Kent County Council leader Paul Carter believes the county's white horse is the ideal image to represent Kent as the Ebbsfleet Landmark.
This week five designs by internationally-acclaimed artists were put on a shortlist for the Ebbsfleet Landmark - known as the Angel of the South - at the Ebbsfleet Valley development.
Situated in the south-east corner of Ebbsfleet Valley, the landmark will tower over both the development and Ebbsfleet International Station.
It has been commissioned by Lands Securities, along with Eurostar and London & Continental Railways.
Among the five shortlisted designs is giant white horse standing in a field - proposed by Turner Prize winning artist Mark Wallinger.

But Cllr Carter believes the county's prancing horse symbol would be a more fitting symbol to represent Kent.
Cllr Carter said: "The prancing White Horse is a powerful symbol which is recognized worldwide and rooted in the county's history.
"Wherever I go, people know that it represents all that Kent stands for. I can't think of a better symbol to go up at Ebbsfleet - it's got the wow factor."
Kent County Council has launched an online campaign to find out what residents of Kent think about the shortlisted designs.
A Kent Councillor would come up with an idea like that as he is subconsciously brainwashed with the logo day in day out at work! Ebbsfleet sounds a bit maritime to me, something that represents the river would be quite fitting. What about a triangle (to represent a sail) with a swan's wing incorporated into the design? Plenty of swans in this area.

I agree G, Ebbsfleet does have a maritime ring to it, perhaps Bexley Council can sell the monstrosity of the fish sculpture in Erith to Kent County Council, if it was up to me I would give it for free!

Yes, I too agree with G. Le Brun's design is fairly apt if he altered the backdrop of the disc into a sail shape triangle. If they really want to keep the prancing horse idea he could etch the outline on the otherside of the sail or in one of the corners.

I agree with the comments about the G Le Brun proposal. The disc should be changed to reflect the maritime history of the area. I would really like to see a giant sundial symbolising the passage of time. Why make the disc and wing from concrete? What could be more befitting than a structure made from bronze to symbolise the major Roman settlements in the Ebbsfleet Valley.

The prancing horse is the obvious choice - withou a halter to represent a free spirit. It should be made like the wooden one in london zoo - not from fallen trees branches but from cast metal and plates possibly lit up at night from the inside.

I don't see why we should have to have a [bold]monstrosity[/bold] at all! It would be far better to spend the money removing the ugly pylons that blight the immediate area around the proposed 'Angel of the South' site
