ILLEGAL immigrants from India have been arrested after a routine vehicle stop by police.

North Kent police officers stopped a van in Gravesend during the early hours of August 7 and arrested 18 Indian passengers.

Four were released without charge because they had the right to work in the UK.

The other 14 passengers were found to be working illegally in Kent.

The Border and Immigration Agency now plans to deport six of them back to India immediately.

It is working with the Indian High Commission for the other eight immigrants to be given Indian emergency passports so they can also be returned home.

Sergeant Thomas McCall, who leads the patrol team which stopped the van, said: "This latest result is an excellent example of how the hard work and tenacity of my officers led to the identification of a large number of individuals who were illegally living and working in this country."
