A charity that helps people who have been abused has been slammed on social media for "demonising men".

Pathway Project released a World Cup flyer detailing the shocking statistics on the rise of domestic abuse when the football is on.

The flyer says ‘No one wants England to win the World Cup more than women. Domestic abuse rates increases by 38 per cent when England lose. Show violence the red card.”

However, people took to Facebook to complain about the stereotype that only men abuse women.

Liam Holmes: “So domestic violence only happens to woman? And is only done by men?”

News Shopper:

Urban Woodsman: “This seems to imply that only women are victims of domestic abuse which im sure isnt true. Maybe their only victims of football baesd domestic abuse!?”

Lynz Bourne: “If you abuse your partner, you are the lowest of the low. How can anyone want to hurt the person they are supposed to love more than anything?”

Chris Honn: “This is so sad. Yes please, lets find a way to keep demonizing men. DV is simply not a gendered issue seeing as the instances of it are very close to 50/50 (56% women 44% men) when it comes to who is a victim.

“Please for the love of god stop alienating 50% of the population by demonizing men.. Also please cite your sources, Because in the real world your cite your sources or it didn't happen.”

Pathway Project responded: “Pathway Project works with both male and female victims. If there is a particular focus at any point in time we promote our services in an appropriate way. If any male victims need support we are very happy to support them too.”

But what do you think? Pathway Project prides itself on helping both men and women in abusive situations, surely this isn’t an unfair campaign if the statistics are there?
