Gin lovers should stock up as Brexit could apparently cause a massive shortage of the tipple.

According to the Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA), the Brexit ‘no-deal’ situation could mean a shortage of juniper.

The UK depends on juniper from the Mediterranean and therefore would make it a lot harder to produce gin once Britain exits the EU.

Miles Beale, chief executive of the WSTA, told the Independent: “The whole of the UK wine and spirit trade relies on the frictionless movement of goods in and out of the UK.

“We have been warning our members to prepare for the worst for the last 18 months. Government seem to have only just woken up to facing the bleakest outcome.”

There are more than 300 gin distilleries in the UK, are there are fears that if the no-deal scenario happens some of these could close because they don’t have the access to the imported goods.

Last year more 55 million bottles of gin were sold and it was named the nation's favourite drink in 2017.

So what are we all going to do? I for one will be panic-buying until a final decision is made about imported goods.
