The boss of public transport in Kent has promised no rural bus services will be cut this financial year.

Phil Lightowler told residents in Dartford that, contrary to news reports, he can ensure there will be no reduction in bus services at least until March 2019.

This comes after Kent County Council launched a consultation named 'The Big Conversation' about subsidised rural bus routes.

Residents are being asked to voice their concerns about the services during 11 public meetings across the county.

This comes after the council made a U-turn on previous plans to cut £2 million from its budget due to a public backlash.

At the Dartford joint transportation board, Mr Lightowler said: “There’s no plans to get rid of any rural bus services.

“It’s a chance for the community to come together and listen to what we are saying about how the bus services run.

“We are looking into how to improve rural transport, that is not what the consultation is all about.”

He added he will be attending meetings in 12 districts and boroughs to answer questions about the future of the service.

In north Kent the public meetings will be held between 7pm and 9pm at Elite Venue, Gravesend on June 26 and STAG Community Arts Centre, Sevenoaks on July 4.
